Museum Receives Preservation Books Award Crucial For Its WWII Collection

The Aliceville Museum applied for and was awarded the Institute of Museum and Library Services Connecting to Collections and Bookshelf.  The Bookshelf is a crucial and permanent resource to help museums provide the optimal environment and care for the museum’s important collections.  It was curated by experts in many areas of the conservation/preservation field and contains not only the finest, most recent resources but also a User’s Guide to Online Resources.

“This collection of preservation books and resources is the very latest in national standards for preservation.” said Mary Bess Paluzzi, Vice President Aliceville Museum Board. “The Aliceville Museum Board of Directors is grateful to the Institute of Museum and Library Services for offering this, through application, to small museums such as ours.  The museum staff will be utilizing these resources to improve and update the safety and preservation of the museum’s valuable collections.”

Sixty five percent of institutions have experienced damage to connections due to improper storage.  A few examples of books in the collection are Archival Care and Management of Photographs, The Care of Prints and Drawings, and Caring for Your Family Treasures.  These books and others are available for public use only at the Aliceville Library.

The Aliceville Museum preserves and displays a collection from World War II German Prisoner of War Camp which was open in Aliceville from 1942 to 1945.  The museum also preserves a collection of military veterans artifacts and local history, as well as a 1948 Coca Cola bottling works that was in place before the museum opened.
